Why It Is Important That I Train My Dog
We were in Bonita Springs the other day giving a Dog Guard Out of Sight Fence quote to a new client. Our product is designed for pet containment to keep the dog safe and on their property. We were not there to discuss dog training, but the client knew that we are also Canine Behavior Trainers, and had a training question. He said that he wanted his dog trained and had some friends send their dog off to a canine boot camp to have other people work with and train his dog. He was wondering if that was a good idea…
There are many dog owners that don’t have the time to train their dog or just don’t want to train their dog. There is so little time in this world and finding the time to train our dog can be really hard to find.
Let me answer this question by coming at it from another angle. First, the reason that I got all four of my dogs was to have the relationship of love and complete trust. I want them to know what is right and wrong. I want them to respect me as their leader, protector, and provider.
To accomplish this, my dogs and I need a great deal of quality time. As they do something wrong, I need to clearly let them know the action is inappropriate. I also need to bond with them by engaging in safe and stimulating play activities. I must never “trick them” into doing something that might frighten or hurt them.
I must provide stimulating activities that will teach my dogs actions I need them to perform. I need them to “come” when they need to be 8by my side. I need them to “stay” so that they will be safe when I need to answer the door. I need them to “sit” when I need them calm and respectful.
I need my dogs to understand that whatever I ask them to do or wherever I take them, they will be safe. If a situation arises where they might become scared, my dogs will look towards me to resolve the situation.
If I can accomplish these things, I will have great dogs. I will have built the bond, trust, and respect that is needed for our relationship. The only way that this will occur is if I am their teacher. I must be the one in charge. I must be the one that is always guiding and showing my dogs the proper direction.
Sending my dogs off to a Canine Boot Camp where I won’t be involved won’t accomplish my stated goal. The relationship between my dogs and me is my responsibility. We will have a great relationship because of the time that we invested together.
